How to Create an AI Character Card
A strong AI character card explains who the character is, how they speak, what situation begins the roleplay, and what the model should remember.
What an AI character card is
An AI character card is a structured profile for roleplay tools. It usually contains the character's identity, personality, scenario, first message, example dialogue, and sometimes embedded PNG metadata for card-aware tools.
The goal is not to write a long biography. The goal is to give the AI enough stable context to act like the character without contradicting the setting.
Core parts of a useful card
- Character purpose: explain what kind of roleplay or interaction this card supports.
- Personality: describe stable behavior, values, habits, fears, and boundaries.
- Scenario: set the starting situation, location, relationship, and current tension.
- First message: begin with a scene that immediately shows tone, action, and character voice.
- Example dialogue: show how the character speaks instead of only explaining it.
- Speaking style: keep narration, dialogue, honorifics, and emotional pacing consistent.
PNG metadata and Chara Card V2
Some roleplay tools can read character data embedded inside a PNG image. Chara Card V2 is a common structure for storing character fields in a more portable way. If metadata is lost during image editing, compression, or re-saving, the card may look like an image but import without usable data.
Submission-ready checklist
- The character's purpose is clear.
- Personality and behavior do not contradict each other.
- The first message fits the world and gives the user something to respond to.
- Description and dialogue are not mixed in a confusing way.
- The card is not only a long explanation with no playable scene.
- PNG metadata has been checked before posting or sharing.
If generation or PNG import fails, use troubleshooting before rewriting the whole card.
