PNG Metadata

Tavern and SillyTavern PNG Metadata Guide

A character card PNG can contain both an image and embedded card data. If the metadata is lost or unsupported, the card may not import correctly.

Tool behavior can differ by environment and version. Treat this page as a practical checklist, then confirm with the current documentation and your local Tavern or SillyTavern setup.

What PNG metadata means

In character card workflows, metadata is structured card information stored inside the PNG file. A compatible tool can read that embedded data and load fields such as name, personality, scenario, first message, and example dialogue.

Chara Card V2 basics

Chara Card V2 is a commonly used card data structure. The exact import behavior depends on the tool reading the file, so avoid assuming every PNG editor, compression tool, or chat frontend preserves the same data.

Why a PNG may not read correctly

  • The PNG does not contain character card metadata.
  • Image editing, compression, or re-saving removed the metadata.
  • The imported format is different from what the tool expects.
  • The data is not recognized as Chara Card V2.
  • The reading tool or version handles metadata differently.
  • Browser or device restrictions affect the local import flow.

Manual fallback

If the PNG does not import, keep a readable backup of the card text. Manual field entry is slower, but it protects the character from being trapped inside an image that no longer carries usable data.

If a PNG imports as an image only, use the PNG metadata troubleshooting checklist before re-saving the file.
